Blocked Port 25

April 19, 2011 by Andrew Seymour

One of the many issues I find with my ISP is that they block port 25 – this causes a somewhat inconvenience when it comes to setting up email accounts and using them – for some reason, if you install Exim4 on Debian (especially with ISPManager) it isn’t then port 587 isn’t automatically opened which is rather annoying since your only option then is port 25 which is blocked.

The simple solution: Edit the SMTPLISTENEROPTIONS at the bottom of the file “/etc/default/exim4” and place within it “-oX 25:587 -oP /var/run/exim4/exim.pid” so it now looks like “SMTPLISTENEROPTIONS = ‘-oX 25:587 -oP /var/run/exim4/exim.pid’” and then simply /etc/init.d/exim4 restart and problem solved – remember though, you may need to open port 587 now in IPTables but that shouldn’t be a problem.
